7 Summer Books We Love

Hey PWR WMN!

When Kim and I started PWR WMN we read A LOT of books! We knew we wanted to start a women’s blazer business but we didn’t know how to get started. Throughout our journey, we have always talked about staying transparent and sharing everything that we learned along the way. A lot of our knowledge came from reading books and google! We read everything, from “How to create an LLC” to “How to create an online women’s work clothing boutique.” Information online is FREE and we made sure to read as much as we could! We also believe that it is so important to keep your mind stimulated and to focus our attention on reading rather than being on our phones or watching TV. We partnered with Christina from Nive Girl Workwear Boutique, and compiled together a list of 7 must read books this summer! We wanted to create a list that was geared towards women and women in business!

Untamed Book Review | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

  1. Untamed, by Glennon Doyle. If you haven’t yet heard of this book, we’d be surprised. It seems as though it has taken over everyone’s Instagram feeds this summer with its eye-catching vibrant fuchsia book sleeve – and for good reason! While this is more of a memoir than a business book, Glennon uses her third book to share her tenacity to continue on as an author and mother, while learning about her husband’s infidelities and subsequently falling for a woman, professional soccer player, Abby Wambach, thereafter.

  1. Lean In, by Sheryl Sandberg is a book about maximizing your career, and it is a must read! We read this book about four years ago and we definitely recommend it to everyone that works in the corporate world or male-dominated industries. Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer for Facebook talks about how to juggle the demands of family and work at the same time. This book is directly targeted at women and digs into gender inequality and why women are still underrepresented in the workforce and corporate leadership roles.

  1. What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20: A Crash Course on Making Your Place in the World, by Tina Seelig. Whether you’re 20 years old or 40, this book is pivotal when implementing change in your life. Using her background as a professor and entrepreneur, Tina leaves out all of the clichés when providing stories of both success and failure to those who wish to improve themselves and/or their business. While the book title seems to target only 20-year-olds, Tina’s advice spans from those transitioning to adulthood, to anyone starting their own business or taking a new career path.

WorkParty: How to Create & Cultivate the Career of Your Dreams ...

  1. Workparty: How to Create & Cultivate the Career of Your Dreams, by Jaclyn Johnson. If you have never heard of Jaclyn Johnson or Create and Cultivate you need to google her and her company ASAP! She is a powerhouse and you will not be disappointed with this book! Create and Cultivate is the fastest growing online platform and conference for millennial women in business. In her book, Jaclyn talks about her career life and what it took to launch her very successful company. She is real and writes about the ups and downs of her life. You will learn tips from the best in the business and what it takes to be a success. Jaclyn expresses herself extremely well in this book and she offers practical advice that you can incorporate into your daily life!

  1. Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, by Angela Duckworth. In this NYT bestselling book, Angela gives readers the roadmap on how to succeed at virtually anything. During her lifetime, Angela earned her PhD and served as a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to that, she spent her career as an advisor for several organizations, including: NBA and NFL teams, the White House, and several Fortune 500 CEOs. Her robust background of work experience and extensive research shines through in this book, as she marries her career research with her experiences growing up as an Asian-American.

  1. Dare To Lead, by Brene Brown. We haven’t started this book, but this book has been recommended to us so many times that we had to include it. Our friend said that she was actually super sad when she finished the book because she wanted more and it was a book she could not put down. “Leadership is not about titles, status and power over people. Leaders are people who hold themselves accountable for recognizing the potential in people and ideas, and developing that potential. This is a book for everyone who is ready to choose courage over comfort, make a difference and lead.”

Your Life Coach - Susie Moore

  1. What if it Does Work Out, by Susie Moore. Everyone has an innate fear of failing, but in this book Susie aims to motivate you to overcome that fear, along with any doubts you may have about starting a business or making the leap to begin that side hustle you’ve been considering for months. When debating on whether or not to begin a new business or hobby, one of the first questions we ask ourselves is, “What if it doesn’t work out?”, which inevitably shuts down the possibility for success even before beginning. Instead of shutting yourself down, Susie encourages readers to explore the possibility of pursuing and succeeding at a life of success and passion – and acting on it!
