The rules of workwear in essence, are no longer what they used to be. Where assimilation was the previous goal of workwear, that goal no longer serves us. We don't want to blend in. A guide telling me how to look assertive and not draw too much attention, is already not the article for me. I want to stand out, I want to be seen, and I want to be heard. So here are the new rules of workwear:
-
Say something
-
Ex: I LOVE traveling, any clothing item that will get you to ask me about a trip is a win for me. So much of my clothing is inspired by the places I’ve been to and I like to think people can see my curious nature just by looking at my outfit.
-
What do you care about? How can you express that in your clothing?
-
Functional
-
Ex: The tiny pocket in the interior of our blazers is the exact size for a tampon. Our pockets are big enough for your hands and phone.
-
My favorite pair of trousers are Dockers from Goodwill because the pockets were insanely deep. We made our own pair of work pants this year and I feel that they’re literally the best ever.
-
-
If it's not functional, why are you wearing it during your most productive hours? It’s like a runner showing up to a race in jeans. YOU NEED POCKETS! All of your clothing should have details that remind you that this item was made with you in mind.
-
Joyful
-
Tiny fun details
-
Buttons
-
Lining
-
-
It has to make me smile. Maybe I’m actually playing dress up and no one but me knows. I want to have fun.
-
Easy
-
If it's fussy/high maintenance I can't do it. Y’all I’m pretty low key and everything that’s even the slightest bit fussy overwhelms me. Dry cleaning? What do you mean every time I wear this item I make a chore for myself? Please no! Everything I make and most of what I buy is machine washable.
-
Love a two birds one stone situation! Reversible clothing is so nifty! I feel like inspector Gadget and I love being able to easily get so much use out of my favorite things.
