My Motto: I Sell Blazers, Not Insulin
If you’ve ever been in sales, then you know time ticks loudly when you’re trying to close a deal. Every minute counts and the stakes feel SO HIGH. When I sold cars, I’d get so wound up about giving my customers an amazing experience and selling as many cars as possible that I wasn’t really able to be present after work because if a customer texted me, I was texting or emailing back within seconds. Needless to say this made me a raging monster outside of work. My body was convinced we were going through the most intense stressful thing of our lives and it was only Tuesday!!!
Eventually I had to remind myself, I’m selling cars, not saving lives, chillllll. It’s even hard to “slow down” when you’re working on something you love and are passionate about. The truth is, if my life outside of work isn’t being taken care of and given the attention it deserves, I simply can’t do a good job, no matter how hard I work. My life outside of work serves me in the most beautiful way, it inspires me. It presents ideas and emotions that I then turn into blazers, marketing ideas, future projects.
I no longer answer emails seconds after they hit my inbox. And I try my hardest to not work when I’m home with my family. It doesn’t serve me or my mission. Working more doesn’t serve me anymore. Working more efficiently, more intentionally, that has served me immensely.
As a company that centers itself around the love and empowerment of women, I’m not here to tell you to work more and work harder, I’m here to tell you to live more, and live harder. Bring joy into every part of your life. Remind yourself, you’re not saving lives (unless you’re a doctor in which case girl lock in!), you can take a breath, step back, reassess, then, you can come back.
I’ve had many stressful things happen to me at PWR WMN. I used these moments to train myself and my nervous system to not see them with as much urgency and doom as I used to. I’m still working on this and every once in a while I catch myself running around like these blazers save lives, but this is where my motto comes in. A drama queen at heart, this motto is repeated many times a day, but let me tell you it works! Try it. Fill in the blank:
“I don’t sell insulin, I ______.”
Sometimes the reminder is all you need.
